openim.de

Yesterday we took over the domain openim.de and the XMPP/Jabber users running on it. The service would have been discontinued at the end of the month and as we think that a takeover is much more in the interest of users, we agreed to the old operator’s proposal. The import of the user accounts and user data took many hours, but everything should be running again by this morning at the latest.

If you don’t want to continue using your openim.de user account on our server, you can delete it yourself here. It is also worth taking a look at our XMPP/Jabber privacy policy. There we also explain what data is stored and for how long. The best way to get support is through our MUC support channel.

We noticed that there are currently many requests with invalid encryption on port 5223. With us, port 5223 (in contrast to the old openim.de server) is only used for Direct TLS (f.k.a. SSL) and not STARTTLS. Please adjust the connection settings in the clients accordingly! Information about our server can be found here.

Further questions? Gladly in the MUC support channel or here under the post as a comment.

Offline Storage Migration did take very long

Wow, the migration of the offline storage from file to database did take very long. I thought one or two hours are enough. No, the scripts ran for 10 hours. Therefore the Jabber/XMPP services were offline for about 10 hours, from ~10:30 pm CEST yesterday to 8:50 am CEST today. We are very sorry about that. Good news: No more big downtimes are planned in the near future.

Maintenance due to offline messages

We need to convert the Prosody offline storage to the new database format. Therefore we need to take the server down. This will happen at between 10 and 11 pm CEST today.

Let’s Encrypt

We just moved from StartSSL to Let’s Encrypt certificates for all public Jabber domains including the certificate for this website. You can find the new certificate fingerprints on the Server Specifications page.

Migration of all Jabber services to a brand new server

This will affect Jabber itself and all transport services, and also this website. And it will take place during the next 24 to 48 hours. Please be patient and expect some service outages. We changed the TTL of our DNS zones to 1 minute but nevertheless it could be that your client still looks for the old server. You might need to relogin to the Internet and/or restart your client.

We will be back here when everything is moved. Until then you also can reach us on Twitter, where a link to this post will also be posted.
