Downtimes Migration Problems Transports

First status information after migration

Ok, the main virtual host jabber.hot-chilli.net and all private virtual hosts moved to the new server today. Also the website and the transport data.

“Transport data” because the transports itself do not run, yet. We need some help from Spectrum maintainers – maybe there is something basicly wrong with the new config files or Spectrum 2 is still too buggy. We will see. Until then please stay tuned and be patient – we do not want to have the transports offline for a long time, but it can take some days.

Also Prosody is having some issues on which we are working hard, especially the maintainer of Prosody, MattJ. Our server is having a lot of load, also “crazy” users ;-) and a Debian system which seems to create more problems with Prosody than other Linux distributions. So if the Jabber server itself is offline from time to time in the next days, we are working on it.

Features Migration

Two new public domains: jabb3r.org and jabb3r.de

On the new server we activated two new public domains:

  • jabb3r.org
  • jabb3r.de

Feel free to register accounts. ;-)

In-band registration is open for now (also for the other domains migrated to Prosody already) – and might be changed as soon as possible to our web registration form which has to be changed because of our migration to Prosody.

We just migrated the first virtual hosts to the new server and Prosody:

  • hot-chilli.net
  • hot-chilli.eu
  • jabber.hot-chilli.eu
  • im.hot-chilli.net
  • im.hot-chilli.eu
  • jabber-hosting.de
  • xmpp-hosting.de

Please tell us about problems you might experience. And we also like to hear some positive feedback.

Pubsub/PEP migration to MySQL complete

…and it seems to work. Sorry for the 30 minute downtime because of that.

Planned Pubsub/PEP migration to MySQL

We are planning to migrate Pubsub/PEP (Publish-Subscribe / Personal Eventing Protocol) from Mnesia to MySQL in the very near future, which means the next two days.

Unfortunally there is no export/import script, so all data will be lost. It is also impossible to export own data from a client, at least I was told so.

Migration should fix some problems with PEP, also MySQL allows more administration and has less resource overhead.

Gadu-Gadu Transport migrated to Spectrum

GG Transport has also been migrated to Spectrum. Only the registered users were imported into the new database. I was not able to import other settings and the buddylists to the new transport. Hopefully this won’t make any problems for the users.

Transports migrated to Spectrum

ICQ, MSN, AIM, Yahoo! and J2J (XMPP) transports were migrated to Spectrum transports yesterday evening and night.

After accidentally stumbled upon Spectrum (thanks to Flo!) I started the migration right away. The old PyXXXt transports were a huge pain long enough (PyMSNt for example created 800GB of traffic each month, alltogether the PyXXXt transports used 90% CPU when running a certain amount of time – which is the reason why we restart the Jabber related services every night) so I was very happy to see a young and well looked after project which really works a lot better. I’m quite enthusiastic at the moment. ;-)

All users and settings were migrated without problems, so maybe you haven’t even noticed that something has changed on the server.

The Gadu-Gadu (GG) Transport will also migrated to Spectrum, but I haven’t managed the migration of the user data yet.

ICQ Transport users please note, that charset was set to ISO-8859-15 – which should be a good choice for European users (German umlauts, other special characters etc). If you experience problems, please change the charset (to utf8 for example) of your ICQ Transport account by clicking on “Register” in the context menu of icq.jabber.hot-chilli.net. You can find this in the Jabber service discovery.

AIM Transport users please note, that the new AIM transport service seems to be a little unstable right now and has to be restarted from time to time. I will take a closer look in the next days.

J2J (XMPP) Transport users please note, that it was not possible to migrate the remote roster data to the new transport service. But as I noticed the remote roster is downloaded during the first connect.

Until now I cannot say if the nightly restart of the Jabber services at 3am CET/CEST is still necessary. The next days or weeks will tell. Stay tuned.

If you should experience problems with the new transport services please contact us in support@conference.jabber.hot-chilli.net.

ejabberd MySQL storage

On December 22nd, 2008, we switched the ejabberd daemon from Mnesia storage to MySQL storage.
